When you run with a group, you’ll become a better runner. I am not saying it will just happen, you’ll need to do a lot of hard work, but the benefits of training in a group environment help! I know, there are times when running alone is ideal, but running with others has tremendous benefits.
Many years ago I started running with a group a regular basis. My first experience with group training was learning about intervals and discovering "Track". Training with other runners made me faster, and I had a lot of fun.
BENEFITS OF A RUNNING GROUP
I have thought about five of the benefits to running with a group. It would be great if you want to add your thoughts and accounts of your experiences.
Benefit 1. Accountability
When you commit to a running group it helps hold you accountable when that little voice in your head says there is no need to run today take it easy. When others are counting on you, you’re more likely to show up. One of the biggest reasons people stop running is because they lack this accountability.
Benefit 2. Consistency
If you really want to improve and become a better runner you need to do it more. Having a group to train with on a regular, weekly (daily in some cases) basis will help ensure that you stick with your running, even after the BIG RACE is done and dusted. When it’s even harder to get those Kms in like in the middle of winter having a group gets you out the door.
Benefit 3. Motivation through Running with a Group
Running with a group can be very motivating because there is ALWAYS likely to be someone who is faster than you. Someone who motivates you to a new level and encourages you to train hard. When you run with a group, everyone there knows what each other is going through, and nobody wants anyone to fail, they work together.
Benefit 4. Learn from Others
Running with a group is also a great way to learn tips and tricks about becoming a better runner. Some running groups offer formal coaching or classes. Others simply offer a time, location and other people. In all settings, it’s virtually impossible NOT to learn from the collective wisdom of the group. Stick with it long enough, and all of that running experience will rub off. Runners tend to talk about running while running.
Benefit 5. Social Fun
There are actually some psychological benefits to running with a group. Running with other people creates an excitement that helps you run faster than you thought you could on your own. Most of all it is fun you meet regularly with like minded people of both sexes and a variety of ages and make friends.
